Hey fellow travelers,
Just got back from Munnar, and while it’s truly stunning — rolling tea gardens, misty hills, waterfalls that make you want to write poetry — I ran into (and heard from others about) a few scams that people should know about before going. Sharing them here so nobody’s trip gets soured:
1. Spice / Herbal Garden Trap
A lot of drivers take you to “spice gardens” or “herbal farms.” The tour is often super short (sometimes 5–10 mins) and then you’re steered into a shop where everything is way overpriced — spices, oils, Ayurvedic medicines, you name it. Drivers usually get a commission.
2. Miracle Oils & Fake Ayurvedic Doctors
Be cautious of anyone diagnosing you with random health issues and then offering “miracle cures.” The prices are sky-high, and the effectiveness is questionable.
3. Commission-based Stops
Some cabbies/guides choose where to take you based on the kickbacks they’ll get, not what’s best for you. This applies to spice shops, tea outlets, and sometimes even restaurants.
4. Aggressive Sellers
A few places have pushy sellers who make you feel guilty if you don’t buy. Don’t give in — a polite but firm “no” works.
5. Overcharging / Hidden Prices
Some attractions or local services (like photo ops, small boating, etc.) don’t tell you the price upfront, then quote a ridiculous amount at the end. Always ask beforehand.
Tips to avoid the stress:
Read recent reviews of spice gardens or shops before visiting.
Don’t feel pressured to buy anything — a smile + “no thanks” is enough.
Agree on prices before you commit (taxis, activities, shops).
Stick to reputed places for Ayurvedic treatments/products.
