I’m planning a trip to Kerala in 2025 and I’m a bit confused about the best way to get around the state. Since Kerala is famous for its backwaters, beaches, hill stations, and small towns spread across different districts, I want to choose the most convenient and cost-effective mode of travel.
By Car / Taxi / Self-Drive: Some travelers say renting a car or booking a private cab is the most comfortable way to explore, especially for families and those who want flexibility. But I’m not sure if driving in Kerala’s winding roads and traffic is easy for outsiders. How expensive is hiring a cab for a week-long trip (say Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Kovalam)?
By Train: Kerala has a good railway network connecting Kochi, Trivandrum, Alleppey, Kozhikode, etc. But are trains frequent and reliable for tourists? Do they save time compared to road travel, or will I miss out on the scenic stops in between?
By Bus: Kerala State Road Transport (KSRTC) and private buses seem to be an economical choice. But are they comfortable for long journeys, especially if I want to travel from Munnar to Thekkady or to smaller villages?
For a first-time traveler who wants to balance comfort, cost, and local experience, what would you recommend – car, train, or bus? If possible, I’d love to hear from people who have actually traveled across Kerala recently.
Also, is a combination (like train for long distances + car for short trips) a better idea?
