Hi everyone,
I’m a new traveler exploring Kerala this year, and one of the things I was really curious about was whether there are any cultural festivals happening in 2025. Kerala is famous for its traditions, and honestly, the festivals are a huge part of why I wanted to visit. After asking locals and doing a bit of research, here’s what I found out:
✨ Thrissur Pooram (May 2025) – This is often called the “mother of all poorams.” It’s a grand temple festival with beautifully decorated elephants, traditional percussion, and a fireworks display that lights up the whole sky. I’ve seen pictures, and it looks like something out of a dream.
✨ Onam (August–September 2025) – This is Kerala’s most famous festival. It’s a harvest celebration, and the highlight is the traditional flower carpets (pookalam), boat races, and the grand feast called Onam Sadhya. Locals told me that during Onam, the entire state is in a festive mood, and even tourists are welcome to join celebrations.
✨ Vallam Kali (Nehru Trophy Boat Race, August 2025) – This is the famous snake boat race that happens in Alappuzha. I’ve read that thousands of people gather to watch these long boats glide through the backwaters with rowers chanting in rhythm. It’s definitely on my bucket list.
✨ Temple Festivals (Jan–April 2025) – All across Kerala, different temples host festivals during these months. They often feature elephant processions, Kathakali performances, and traditional music. Even if you don’t plan for a specific one, chances are you’ll stumble upon a celebration if you’re here.
✨ Christmas & New Year (December 2025) – Since Kerala has a big Christian community, Christmas is celebrated beautifully here, especially in Kochi and Thrissur. Kochi Carnival at Fort Kochi in the last week of December is also a big cultural event with parades, music, and fireworks.
For me, what makes Kerala special is how these festivals are not just events but a true glimpse into the culture. Locals are warm and welcoming, and as a traveler, you don’t just watch – you actually feel like you’re part of it.
So yes, if you’re coming to Kerala in 2025, you’ll definitely find cultural festivals happening almost every season. I’m personally planning my trip around Onam and the boat races, but honestly, every festival here has its own magic.
