My Kerala Travel Experience During Onam 2021 – A 6-Day Family Journey
In 2021, I traveled with my family to Kerala for 6 days during Onam, and it turned out to be one of the most colorful and culturally rich experiences we’ve ever had. Visiting Thrissur, Guruvayoor, and Alleppey at that festive time gave us a real taste of Kerala’s traditions.

Day 1-2: Thrissur – The Cultural Capital
We landed in Kochi and headed straight to Thrissur, often called the cultural capital of Kerala. The city was buzzing with Onam vibes — decorated streets, flower markets, and music everywhere.
Pookalam (Floral Rangoli): Outside almost every house and hotel, we saw beautiful flower carpets. It felt like walking into a giant flower festival.
Shopping for Onam Sarees: My family couldn’t resist buying traditional Kasavu sarees (white sarees with golden borders) from a local shop. It felt special to wear something so rooted in Kerala’s heritage.
Cultural Shows: At a community hall, we watched a Kathakali performance and Pulikali (tiger dance), which were both vibrant and unforgettable.
Thrissur truly set the tone for our trip — a mix of devotion, culture, and festivity.

Day 3: Guruvayoor – Spiritual Experience
Next, we visited the Guruvayoor Temple, one of the most important temples in Kerala. The temple town was beautifully lit for Onam. Devotees from all around were offering prayers, and the whole place had a deeply spiritual aura.
Temple Visit: Standing in line with other devotees, hearing the rhythmic temple drums, and watching the rituals gave us a sense of peace and connection.
Onam Shopping: We bought small souvenirs and temple prasadam for friends back home.
The visit to Guruvayoor was not just about sightseeing but about soaking in Kerala’s spiritual traditions.

Day 4-6: Alleppey – Backwaters & Onam Feast
Our final stop was Alleppey, famous for its houseboats and backwaters. The timing couldn’t have been better — it was Onam Sadhya day at our resort.
Onam Sadhya: Served on banana leaves, it had nearly 20 dishes — from sambar, avial, olan, and pachadi to payasam at the end. Eating with our hands, as locals do, made the experience more authentic.
Snake Boat Race: We were lucky to catch the Vallam Kali (snake boat race) nearby. The energy, drum beats, and cheering crowds made it one of the most thrilling experiences of our trip.
Houseboat Ride: Cruising on the backwaters with coconut trees swaying on both sides was the perfect way to relax after the festivities.
