Driving your own SUV to Manali in January is doable but needs caution. The Chandigarh–Manali highway is well-maintained, though you may face icy patches as you get closer to Manali. The Atal Tunnel has made travel much smoother, but once you cross towards Solang or Rohtang side, snow can block roads. If your SUV has good ground clearance and you’re experienced in mountain driving, you’ll be fine, but carrying snow chains is strongly advised. Another option is to park in Manali and hire local taxis for day trips — locals are used to winter driving. Avoid driving after dark in heavy snow.
